Are You Reading the 2009 One Book, One Community Book???

Last evening this year's One Book, One Community: Our Region Reads project was launched at a lovely reception at the Palmyra Community Library.

In case you missed it the book selection for 2009 is The People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.

From a Publisher's Weekly review: "Late one night in the city of Sydney, Hanna Heath, a rare book conservator, gets a phone call. The Sarajevo Haggadah, which disappeared during the siege in 1992, has been found, and Hanna has been invited by the U.N. to report on its condition. Missing documents and art works (as Dan Brown and Lev Grossman, among others, have demonstrated) are endlessly appealing, and from this inviting premise Brooks spins her story in two directions. In the present, we follow the resolutely independent Hanna through her thrilling first encounter with the beautifully illustrated codex and her discovery of the tiny signs-a white hair, an insect wing, missing clasps, a drop of salt, a wine stain-that will help her to discover its provenance. Along with the book she also meets its savior, a Muslim librarian named Karaman. Their romance offers both predictable pleasures and genuine surprises, as does the other main relationship in Hanna's life: her fraught connection with her mother. In the other strand of the narrative we learn, moving backward through time, how the codex came to be lost and found, and made."

So, what is this One Book thing? Well, it's a collaboration between 72 libraries in seven south-central Pennsylvania counties to bring you events and book discussions involving the selected book.

The good news is that if you don't live in one of our counties you can still participate by joining the discussions online at the One Book link above.

Be sure to check out the "Related Materials" page for related titles on events and places from the book as well as links to some great sources on the web.

Miss Bun has heard nothing but good things about this book. So run, don't walk to your nearest library, bookstore, computer, etc. and get a copy of People of the Book and start reading!

Lifelong Learning = Modern Scholar Series by Recorded Books available HERE!

Recorded Books, which is the Mercedes Benz of the audiobook industry,
has a remarkable series of college level courses presented on various topics. Each course is taught in a format of 14 lectures of 35 minutes each on CDs by some of our nation's most respected professors and scholars.

Each course includes a detailed, full-color course guide. The course guide includes not only the professor's outline and lecture notes, but numerous resources and options for further study.

And if that is not enough, you'll be given access to an expansive website with further information, supplemental materials, links to related websites, and a final exam to test your comprehension of the subject.

Currently we have 97 titles available throughout our county library system. Here are just a few of them to give you an idea of what this series has to offer:

  • Walt Whitman and the Birth of American Modern Poetry
  • Astronomy Earth, Sky and Planets
  • From Jesus to Christianity a History of the Early Church
  • How to Listen to and Appreciate Jazz
  • Understanding the Holocaust
  • Waking Dragon the Emerging Chinese Economy and its Impact on the World
  • The Building Blocks of Human Life Understanding Mature Cells and Stem Cells
  • Communication Matters with Deborah Tannen
  • Rings, Swords and Monsters Exploring Fantasy Literature
  • Rethinking Our Past Recognizing Facts, Fictions, and Lies in American History
This would be an excellent resource for home-schoolers or anyone with a desire to exercise their brain cells.

Miss Bun loved the course on Walt Whitman because she thinks he's the bees knees! (But you didn't hear that from me!)

To take a look at titles in this series in our card catalog click here:
Lebanon County Libraries Card Catalog (use the search term "modern scholar")

If you have a Lebanon County Library Card you can log in and reserve one for yourself. (Be sure to select the library you want to pick it up at.)

Sign Up for an eBay Class!

Hey Peeps!

Now is the time to learn about buying and selling on eBay. Wouldn't it be cool to take all that STUFF you have sitting around the house and turn it into BIG BUCKS? (Rule #1: Always have a positive attitude.)

Well, to help you out with that, the Annville Free Library is offering an eBay Buying Class on Tuesday, March 31st @ 6:15 pm.

This is part one of two eBay classes (Guess what part two is?) and will be presented by Liz Conrad from Lebanon Valley College. Thanks to Liz we will be able to use one of LVC's computer labs so everyone will have a computer to use! Sweet!

Students will meet at the library and walk as a group to LVC (which is right across the street) so please try to be prompt. (Miss Bun will be very appreciative!)
There is a $10.00 fee for this class and registration is required.

Folks signing up should come to class prepared to open an eBay account and will need the following:
  1. drivers license

AFL's National Day of Service Report

We are happy to report that we took in over 500 lbs. of food for our local Food Bank. This food drive was in response to President Obama's (actually President-Elect at the time) call for Americans to participate in a National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As we didn't have much lead time for this event it's amazing the amount of food we took in. Thanks to all the wonderful folks in our communities that participated. Just like most of the things we do here at the library we couldn't have done it without you! (Stay tuned next year as we are considering making this a yearly event.)

Inauguration News & A Vicki Sighting!!!

So... did all of you see our young adult librarian, Vicki Gingrich, being interviewed by WGAL at the inauguration last week? (If you know Vicki you are not surprised that out of the thousands of people there she's the one that landed on TV.) It was an awesome day & we had our library TV broadcasting the events for our patrons. Here are some of Vicki's photos of the day:

Greetings from the circulation Desk!

For those who don’t know me, my name is Paula La Flame. I started working at the library mid-November. It has been a pleasure getting to know members of the community. I appreciate everyone’s patience while I have been learning the library’s system. I would also like to thank the Library staff for all the help they have given me. The Annville Free Library is a wonderful place to work. Stop in and say hello!

Check out this nifty explanation: Video:RSS in Plain English )
Feel free to comment or send us an email. We'd love to hear from you!
